Our Concept

Our video will start in black and white. A female singer is dressed in a black and white dress from 1960s and has this whole flair of 60s. The set will in decorated with tubes. As the song progresses some bits of colour will appear, e.g. red lipstick on lips of a female singer.

We also have a male singer who will be a guide for her to another world full of colour. And at certain point he will activate this mechanism of colour coming to the video. We will see how tubes are gradually being filled up with the smoke and then somethinng close to an explosion occurs. This colourful smoke devours our lead female singer, making everything coloured.

Gradually the theme of psychodelia comes into the video as well. And as the video progresses the colours become more and more psychodelic, there are psychodelic pictures. The lighting becomes different - crazier. And at the very end of the music video, both male and female singers become the smoke and vanish.

Our timeline

This is a timeline for our music video. This is the base for our storyboarding process, which we are going to be doing next week.

Music Video Idea #3 ("Infinity")

The XX is one of my favourite bands, which sings in the genre "post-punk". Their music is very sophisticated, rich with unusual sounds and has its own unique vibe. Their videos are quite sophisticated as well.

They have very beautiful a little surreal colours in the videos, the lighting is incredible and they also use a lot of slow-motion as if they were savouring the beauty they are showing.

They also have narrative in their videos apart from "Crystallised", their most popular video, where they are just singing.
And we also can see them singing even in narrative videos.

So there is my concept for "Infinity".

Narative: A guy (male singer) walks through the forrest singing. A girl (female singer) sits in some room. The guy reaches an abandoned house inside the forrest, then he tries to open the door, but doesn't succeed. The girl tries to open this house from the inside and also doesn't succeed. They both try windows, but they still cannot reach each other. And they stay singing on the opposite sides of the door. At the end of song we see how something pushes them away from the door. And then it slowly opens and they see ech other.
There is also a band singing. Two singers in two separate frames.

Music Video Idea #2 ("Mayday")

The Unkle is an alternative rock and trip hop band. They have quite weird videos as well, however, they're not particularly surrealistic. In this video...

we see what image the band tries to create for itself - rebellion, as many rock groups do.

They also make some emphasise on sex such as in the "Runway"...

And some album covers.

They also have another type of videos which feature nature in some of it extreme states...

This again is a feature of a rock, or experimental band since it brings any emotion or anything to the extreme level, which definitely appeals to its target audience.

This is the link to The Unkle's official website: http://unkle.com/music/. It looks like a website of some rock or pank band. There are lots of weird pictures there, some of which are not particularly attractive, but this is again aiming well at the target audience. There is also a Blog section, where fans can find out more information about the band, their tours, their songs, their history, so everything that develops the star image of the band and keep fans interested.

I would like to make a music video on their song "Mayday", which is really energetic and has a lot to work with. This again is just a concept. All the video, or the most part of it should be made in the negative. There is a band playing a song, which alternates with shots of crashes, major disasters etc. But the main emphasis is made on band itself performing. And although, I never came across "The Unkle" music video, which features the band itself, I think in this case that may be an appropriate approach. It may also include some narrative, which will not be in the negative, and will indicate an attempt to get out of this reality.

Music Video Idea #1 ("Tessellate")

In my first music video idea I turn again to one of my favourite bands "Alt-j (∆)". I want to use the song from their first album, "Awesome Wave", which is called "Tessellate". This is probably one of their most celebrated songs. And here is the link to the music video...

Alt-j is an experimental rock band. And usually their videos are very weird. In some of them they use narrative, but this is not the case all the time. Nonetheless, we never see them singing themselves, in fact we can only see their faces in only one music video "Matilda", however, these are just pictures of them and not them actually doing something.
And this is probably their most weird video.
Soon enough they're going to release their new album "All Is Yours". Some of music videos for their new album have ben released already, and it's possible to see the difference between their first and second albums. The videos as well as their songs as well as their star image remained quite weird and unusual, but there is some tendency to make everything a bit more "normal". This is an example of the music video from their second album.
There are some pictures that may illustrate the overall mood and atmosphere of the band, their style.

So my concept of the music video rather than a proper idea is based on experimenting with time flow. At first, we see several breakable objects, e.g. glasses, cups, plates and, finally, mirror. And mirror seems to be especially important since this is the only object that we can actually see flying towards the floor in super slow-motion and we can see someone dropping it down. Then we see what happened before to the person who broke all the objects (not sure what it is yet), which is showed in a normal time flow. But this alternates with moments that happen just after the mirror was broken and time goes backwards to the point where the person actually breaks the mirror. Then in the end we see something that happened after the mirror was broken which resolves the situation and the mirror that was broken becomes a normal mirror again, not a set of splinters.
